Free People of Color (FPOC)
in the 1850 Census of Loudoun County Virginia
The surnames listed on these pages are excerpted from a complete transcription of the 1850 Census of Loudoun County VA , which was transcribed by Carly Josephson, and data presented here are used with her permission.
Once you have identified a surname, that might be your ancestor(s), I would suggest that you look at the person or family in the context of the complete census, in order to see who they were enumerated with, in what district of Loudoun, and the names of neighboring families, which can provide clues to other relatives and former slaveholders. After viewing the transcription, I'd suggest that you also look at photocopies of the actual record.
Loudoun County had one of the largest percentages of free African Americans in the state of VA, prior to emancipation. For information about many of the surnames presented here, in earlier time periods, please visit Paul Heinegg's website "Free African Americans of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland and Delaware"
Click on the letter to go to a surname on the table of contents list - then follow that name to an alphabetized listing of those persons enumerated in the census (detailed index currently includes surnames A through D - will be uploading the rest within a few days) ) I have included first name, age, color, birthplace, occupation, and some other notes when those were listed. The majority of persons listed were born in VA.
Be aware that surname spellings changed, from census to census, many names were mis-spelled, and family members did not always have the same surname.
The use of "M" for mulatto and "B" for black - does not necessarily indicate a persons skin color, nor amount of perceived admixture, and also varies from one census period to the next. For a complete discussion of FPOC visit the Free Persons of Color Forum at Afrigeneas, where you can share information or get assistance in your family research.
