candomblé

Conclusion

I hope you've enjoyed this brief glimpse into Afro-Brazilian religious practices. Eighteen days was not enough time to begin to even scratch the surface of the complexities of Afro-descendant religious practices in Brazil.  I learned enough to realize that it will take years of study to begin comprehend the enormous variation and subtleties between and among Candomble terreiros and nations and there is still the whole question of Umbanda to consider.

I want to thank Babalorisha Jose Flavio, Iya Lucinha, & Babalorisha Leo for inviting me into their homes and hearts.  Many thanks to all the wonderful folks I met - who I hope to see again soon.

I am planning to return in January  - and will be putting together a trip for Lukumi priests and scholars in August of 2007 in conjunction with Babalorisha Jose Flavio and Mae Maria.

Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions.

Axé,

Denise
